Protect Your Eyes!

Last week, I was honored to be part of The Motherhood's World Sight Day briefing from The Vision Counsel.

Did you know that October 10th was World Sight Day?  Well, it was!  Just go on Twitter and search the hashtag #WorldSightDay.  You will find tons of information and links!

Research shows that more than 40% of parents don’t make sure that their children wear UV protective sunglasses – the most effective tool for blocking damaging UVA and UVB rays. This is extremely dangerous for kids, especially those under 10, who are at higher risk of UV damage than adults.  Whoa.

Those of us involved in the briefing were able to listen to Dr. Carrillo-Owen,  medical advisor with The Vision Counsel speak to us about the following:
  • Impact of aging on eyes
  • Digital eye strain
  • Importance of eye exams
  • Hereditary eye conditions
So not only is wearing sunglasses important, but we also need to beware of Digital Eye Strain, something we bloggers are definitely susceptible to! After all, adults and children are spending WAY more time in front of digital screens than ever before.  This prolonged time on devices fatigues our eyes!

There are ways to help this strain on our eyes.  For example, know the 20-20-20 rule:  every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break, and look 20 feet away.  Also, clean your screen (guilty!); reduce lighting glare; stay 20-24 inches away from the screen; and position your computer 10-15 degrees below sea eye level.

And of course, routine eye exams are super important for everyone in your family.  These eye exams can detect a variety of issues including near or farsightedness; astigmatism; blurred vision, etc.

I think the important takeaway is to not take your eyes for granted!  Buy sunglasses for everyone in your family!  Schedule eye appointments!  Maintain healthy vision.

Even (nerdy) swim goggles protect the nerds eyes.

This post is brought to you by The Motherhood, and I've been compensated for my time.

It's why I refuse to ever have a Kindle...I'm certain my vision would be bonkers if I read all my books digitally.

And for your haha files--I read this and went to grab the wipes that I had for my computer screen....they were totally dried up. I'm sure the one that I used like a year ago was completely worth it. ;)
