For Dan: Goodbye and Godspeed

Last night we threw a party.  A party to honor my brother Dan before he heads to Afghanistan for a one year deployment.  A deployment that leaves behind a father and a mother, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 1 niece and 4 nephews.  A deployment that will have him braving both the elements and the enemy.

Somehow, right before my eyes, my little red-headed baby brother with the cowlicks and picky eating habits has turned into a man.  A soldier.  (But still a dork.)

So last night, friends and family came to say their thanks and goodbyes.

We asked everyone who came to bring something to donate to the troops.

What could be more American than a flag, a grill, men and beer?  Not much.

When you look at this picture, you see a smiling Uncle and Nephew.
When I look at this picture, I see ET the Extra Terrestrial's bloated corpse belly.

No party would be complete without bored teenagers.

Heyyyy ladiezzzz.  (I'm already dreading his teen years.)

Father and Son

"To wish someone Godspeed is to ask for God's blessings on his or her endeavor, most notably a long journey or a risky but potentially rewarding venture."

Godspeed, brother.  I'm so proud of you.  Come home safe to us.

Warning:  Watching this WILL make you cry.  (Quite possibly in the first 10 seconds.)

Told ya so.

I'm so looking forward to seeing Dan this weekend before he heads off. Deployments are tough, but this was such a touching send off. Will be thinking of Danny everyday he's over there!

Well, you know how much I get what your family is and will go through, but care packages are the best on both sides. Gives you a purpose and him something to look forward to. That will keep his spirits up & that is half the battle. (No pun intended.) Hugs to you and the fam.
