Where I'm From

I am from lighted soccer fields, from borrowing money for Mike's Pizza Palace and the penny candy aisle at Webb's.  I am from banana-seat bikes with handlebar streamers, from heavy silver roller skates with red wheels, from rushing home upon hearing the loudest whistle on the planet.

I am from the big blue house on the corner lot, with the lantern-holding jockey keeping watch. I am from always unlocked doors and gazebo benches and ducking low-flying bats in the evening dusk.  I am from "Colored Eggs", hide-and-go-seek, and bubble gum bubble gum in a dish...

I am from tall pine trees dripping sap, from crispy pine needles blanketing a makeshift ballfield in the back yard, from a rusted black swing set that tipped precariously out of its foundation when swings were swung.  From magestic pink azalea bushes and scratchy green turf basement carpeting.

I am from dripped sarcasm and ruckus laughter, from Sarah and Celia, from Katherine and Ellen.

I am from laughter is better than tears and holiday traditions with shiny gold elves and avoidance is better than confrontation.

From straight A's are required and sleepovers are not allowed.  From family game nights and videotaped Christmas mornings and fashion shows.

I am from sit, stand, kneel Catholicism.  I am from routine without thought. I am from heavy organ music and always sitting on the right side of the church.

I'm from a rural village without traffic lights, Amish wagons slowing traffic, Sarah-burgers and lime green jello salad.

From Katie questions, from Danny getting "spilled", from the "rude, rude, rude's".  I am from Schlitz beer and G&Ts.  I am from Ft. Lauderdale, Ocean City Maryland and Keuka Lake.

I am from shelves of crumpled papers, old school textbooks and yearbooks in the basement and stacks of shoeboxes with old Polaroids stacked precariously in the front hall closet.   I am from big heavy drawers at the end of the upstairs hallway, rarely pulled open, but chock-full of tangible 1980's school memories.

I can't even tell you how fun this was to write.
I found this via Ali, who found it via Jennifer (my Blissdom roomie).
Template for this writing exercise, which I STRONGLY recommend you try, is here.
Shoot me a comment if you do one of your own - I'd love to read it.

I *so* just jumped on this bandwagon. Love, love, love! Yours, Ali's, Jennifer's. This is incredible. Thank you!

Would be interesting to try another version where we imagine what our kids might say. Or what we hope they'll remember.

We had a cottage growing up on Honeoye Lake... not too far from Kueka! Thanks for the memories that your memories stirred up in me! I'm going to try this out!

Really well written ~ images so strong, and relatable! The drawers remind me of drawers at my in-laws house...often gone through with our kids on visits!
