It's a's a's a caped tomato?!

Did you know that tomatoes are a superfood?  Me neither.  But I do now!

They are also good for your heart.  (Which is easy to remember because red = heart.  I'm wicked smaht like that.)

An article published in this month's edition of the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine demonstrates that, by way of my dumbed-down explanation, hey tomatoes are good for you!

And guess what?  Canned tomatoes contain even more lycopene than raw tomatoes.

So because I care, I hereby give you a great heart-healthy pasta sauce recipe, courtesy of my Hubby.  From our family to yours:

Viz Family Pasta Sauce:

One large can of Hunt’s Tomato Sauce

Two small cans of Hunt’s Tomato Paste (Italian)

Can of Hunt’s Diced Tomatoes

1 lb. Italian Sausage (cooked and drained)
One large sweet onion
One large green pepper
Salt & Pepper to taste
Sugar – 1 or 2 tablespoons
Italian Seasoning
Fresh basil

Simmer in large pot.  Serve with love.

And for more information about the health benefits of tomatoes, check out the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans or this interactive webinar.

I'm going to have to try that. Everytime we go grocery shopping, we buy a different kind of spaghetti sauce because we can never find a kind we LOVE. I'm grocery shopping tonight, and I'm trying this recipe next time we have pasta. It sounds good! I wonder if it would be good with ground beef instead of the sausage?
