My Neurotic Reasons Why I've Decided to Run a Half Marathon in 3 Weeks

So.  Yeah.

Notice my October mileage? ---------------------------------------------------->

Notsomuch running going on these days.

4 of my co-workers and I are running the Cape Cod Marathon relay on Halloween morning.  I have the lovely 6 mile hilly leg of that race.

But 6 miles?  Ehhhh...even if I wasn't in that good of shape, I figure I can still huff and puff and wheeze and gasp probably run for an hour.

On November 7, my youngest brother and my Sis are running a half marathon near our hometown in upstate NY.  They invited me to run too, but I begged off, simply because I knew I wasn't motivated didn't nearly have enough time to train.

But I made plans to head to NY that weekend.  To watch them.

And then I realized that it would suck just to watch.  That I'd get there and feel disappointed with myself for not running.

So I came up with a compromise:

I could run the last 6 miles with them!  Perfect!

So that was the plan.  (Emphasis on *was*)

But then my little brain started thinking:

How would I get to Mile Marker 7 to join up with them?

Where the heck would I park?

And sure, those are just petty logistical details that I'm certain could be worked out.  (Probably just by scoping out the race course the day beforehand, right???)

But wait!  There's more!

But what if I jump in and start running with them for the last 6 miles and they still run faster than me?

Then I'd be the moron running through the finish line, sans my siblings, with no number.

So that same little brain of mine started working overtime.

I threw out my idea on twitter.

"Ok, so do u think it's possible for me to start training now for a 1/2 marathon on Nov. 7? I can run 6 miles now w/ no problem."

And received a number of affirmations that yes, indeed, it could be done.

Someone suggested I look up Hal Higdon's half marathon training program

I started at Week 9.

Hold me.

Lol. You can do it.

Once you're past 7 or 8 miles, it's all mental.

Halfs are fun! Good luck!

Good luck! It's a long term goal of mine, but I'm far from it.

You got this! I'm doing one in March which is a ways off but I know that if I had to do one sooner I could.

You will rock this woman!

Oh, my. Good luck with that. I am all for working out and staying in shape, but I only run if someone is chasing me;)

Yes, yes, yes, you can do it! I ran a half-marathon last year with nine weeks of training, but at the time I was only running TWO miles on a regular basis. You're way ahead of me, so you're in good shape, mama. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Oh, you are going to rock. Go, you!

You can do it! Just imagine a fun drink at the end and being able to gloat that it only took you a few weeks to train while it took everyone else months!!!

You so have this wrapped up tight, mama!! I have complete and utter faith in you, and you're going to run the crap out of this half-marathon. I'm so excited for you! And you are in awesome shape, and you are one hot there.

You couldn't get me to run a half marathon if you coated me in honey and threw a hive of bees at me.

But, you'll do great! Just think of bees!
