Comment Moderation and Word Verification - Please Tell Me Why

I HAVE GIVEN UP CAFFEINE.  Starting today.

Yeah.

My beloved Coke Zeros?  Buh-bye.

I usually have (at least) 2 cans a day.  Every. Single. Day. One at breakfast and one at lunch.  (I despise coffee and tea.)

We'll see how it goes.  I'd like to think that taking this step will help me with my weight loss because I tend to eat crap food that tastes sooooo good when I'm washing it down with a Coke Zero.  Eating an apple with a Coke Zero?  Not gonna happen.

I'm limiting myself to just water at first.  (Go big or stay home, right?)

So admittedly, I'm a bit cranky.

And while I'm being cranky, will you allow me to have this moment to get something off my chest?

For those of you who have comment moderation and/or word verification on your blog...

WHY??????!!!!

This topic was my biggest take-away from Bloggy Boot Camp in Baltimore.  As a matter of fact, my blog was a perfect example of what NOT to do, for I had both.

Is your reasoning that you don't want to get spammed?

Trust me, you won't.  Hello - the SITS Girls don't use comment moderation and they receive over 400 comments a day!

The best thing I ever did was remove both from my blog.  Now someone can comment and their comment shows up immediately.  I receive an e-mail with the comment.  Easy peasy.  I'm not getting any spam.  My comment totals have risen.  My e-mail is not clogged with comments that need to be published.

I read a LOT of blogs.  (This is my blogroll.)  It gets kinda aggravating when I want to leave a comment and I:

1.  Need to sign in.
2.  THEN must "solve" the word verification.
3.  And THEN my comment doesn't even show up!  I have to WAIT for it to be "moderated."

So will you do me a favor?

Just try it.  Try it for one week.  Remove your word verification and/or comment moderation function.  (On Blogger, you will find this on your Dashboard under "Settings" and then the "Comments" tab.)

Leave a comment with your opinion on this!  (...along with your bet as to how long I can remain caffeine-free.)

DITTO! Word Verification is the bane of my exsistance. For reals.

Also I gave up my Pepsi almost two months ago. It was a week of hell but it's been okay since then.

Yes!

There is nothing more annoying when you read tons of blogs then having people make it take twice as long as it needs to - why, oh why is there such a thing as word verification?

And don't get me started on people who have word verification pop up *after* you've hit submit, so if you don't know to scroll back to the bottom of the page you're unaware your comment didn't go through.

I have comment moderation because I have gotten spam and when it hits, there is a freaking lot of it that comes through.

Heather@PixieDust said...

if you want comments, make it as easy a possible to leave one. And if you get one you don't like or doesn't belong you CAN delete them.
Good luck on the caffeine-free binge!!

LOL! I didn't even know I had word verification on, so I just turned it off. As for comment moderation, I do do that, but I have a legitimate reason (loooong story). I've been toying with the idea of taking it off, but for now, am kinda chicken. Just know that if I do, it'll all be for you. ;)

And as for the caffeine-free thing? Bless you, lady, you're a stronger woman than I!

AMEN. I also think that partial feeds are of the debbil.

Congrats on going caffeine free! I quit Diet Coke two months ago and now it tastes like crap to me. You can do it!

You can all do what you want with your comments, but just make sure MINE are getting through. Because I have super witty and pithy things to say. Believe it.

Or you may want to include me in your 'don't even notify me - just go to spam' folder now.

I have been tempted but not used either yet. So far mostly good.

Good luck with the no caffeine, I couldn't do it...

You don't like coffee or tea? How can we be friends? I guess it's ok - more for me!

I do get spam. Erection creams seem to be the "thing" lately. However, I hate word puzzles and sign ins and moderation too. I have mine set that for any post older than 5 days ago, there is moderation and I have to accept or reject it. This is because 99% of my spam is on an older post.

Walking a mile in your shoes over here.

Doctor told me to quiet caffeine last week b/c of my stomach issues.

Now, everything is grey and colorless.

Can't even get excited about removing comment moderation.

I'll pray for you, you pray for me, but what do we do about this dang withdrawal headache in the meantime???

Congrats on losing the comment moderation! I hadn't paid attention but knew I wasn't a fan. I have neither and my comments are still nil. Must be the lack of posting...

Getting ready for my second cup of tea. I'll give you a week. The reasoning won't be because you can't take it. It'll be because you're being short with your children and they don't deserve it. Personal experience who?

I have asked several bloggers on Twitter why they do verification and/or moderation and the answer is always, verification keeps the spam away and moderation keep ppl from leaving nasty comments or being critical of the bloggers post. I don't have either on mine.

I never had commentmoderation or word verification on my blog and didn't get any spam for just over a year. Then all of a sudden I started getting it. At that point I added comment moderation on posts older than one week - those were the posts that were getting the spam for some reason. The spam lasted for about a month and I haven't had any since.

Ugh, thank you! I didn't know how to remove that comment format...so I just did it and amen to that! Good luck with the the no caff - I give you kuddo's because I couldn't do it!

I HATE comment verification. hate it. Especially when people run giveaways and have 25 ways to enter but you have to also enter a code for everysinglecomment! Makes me want to pull my hair out.

Cheri said...

How do you make sure you get an email with each comment (as the blog author)? I have looked and looked and cannot figure it out!

Rebecca said...

I'll try it again, but I got spammed the minute I took it off.

If you're only on water, but still crave the bubbles, try seltzer...it gets me through the day (but I'm a coffee freak too).

Good luck with quitting!!!

Lolli said...

Yup. It stinks. I love that you were so strongly converted to the non-CV camp. :)

I quit coffee on March 1st. As long as I ran, I was okay. I missed the taste so I bought some sugar free coffee flavored Nips and it helps. I don't suppose they make them in Coke flavor, though.

Couldn't agree with you more!

You can do it!! I stopped drinking pop (diet or otherwise), right before Superbowl. (And, I worked at a restaurant and I got free pop, all day, every day). I haven't had any pop since then, what 3 months or so?! Well, I lie, I did have a diet coke the other day, but I couldn't even drink half the can, it was that bad.

But, it will get worse before it gets better! I used the Crystal Light in my water, but I mainly did straight water.

AMEN SISTER! (On the comment moderation and word spam blah blah blah blah whatever. HATE that!)

Also... I am giving up Coke too starting tomorrow. I had a really rough week and a ton of Coke recently.... but ugh. Ugh! HEADACHE!

You can do it! We can do it! Go Sarahs!

i took off the word verification awhile ago. but for some reason never took off the moderation. ok i am guessing the reason i didn't take it off is bc i am somewhat of a control freak.

but i just did it. all for you :)

Venassa said...

I agree completely. I removed it from mine. I've done it a couple times where I click to submit the comment, and the page refreshes to get me to do the word verification, and I automatically close the page, thinking the comment went through.

Maureen said...

Agreed!

As for the caffeine, you again inspire.

But I'm not going there. No way, now how.

Good luck, friend. Really, I mean it. And I'll raise my coffee/diet Pepsi/tea to you!

First, I'm guessing your headache is so achingly horrific right now you don't give a rat's tail about comment moderation.
Second, I wrote a post about astrology and suddenly got tons of spam comments. For awhile I did word verification to avoid it, but then realized prohibiting anonymous posts solved the issue. So yeah, why would you do word verification?

Jayme said...

A girl after my own heart <3
I've complained about this on my blog too LOL

Mandy P said...

I turned off word verification because it annoys me as well. BUT...I do have comment moderation turned on ever since someone got a bug up their rear and decided to unleash their pent up aggression on ME...anonymously. It was very rattling (and undeserved, if I do say so myself). So, if you have never received a negative comment (one that calls you names, etc) or you have nerves of steel, then I say, "Congratulations!" I hope you never find out what it's like! But to those who like to medoerate, I say I understand.

LisaDay said...

I have it because I don't know how to turn it off. It's not the first time I have read about how annoying it is. I know how annoying it is. Laziness is the reason why.

Stopping by from SITS.

PS-Good luck being caffeine-free. It's the chocolate I would miss.

Hey girl!

I'm going to consider your suggestion! I have comment moderation on - but only for posts more than a month old, because that's where I found a bunch of nasty spam once.

People who don't use blogger of wordpress (in particular) have told me that its a real pain to leave a comment.

NotJustAnotherJen said...

A-f'n-men! If I want to take the time to comment, please don't make it hard on me. I like your experiment and challenge and will forward your post to those that I like to read but still have this hurdle. Good luck going cold turkey. Just keep lots of water nearby and try an apple each day.

Natalie said...

Ok!Ok! I'll try it for a week....no comment moderation. I'm already freaking out :)
Found you through Angry Julie's post and I'm glad I did.

Visiting via Angry Julie! That totally makes sense about the comments...I'm gonna try it! Thanks for showing me the light =)

Yep I hate capcha. It's actually interesting to get the few and far between comments in Russian. I always get it translated. Never anything interesting or juicy, though!
