A Beginner's Guide to Running - Tunes

"Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun..."
--Madonna ("Hung Up")

So in honor of the Boston Marathon today, I felt compelled to do another post about running.  Did you know that it's my LIFE GOAL to run the Boston Marathon?  It really truly is.  (So sayeth the girl who didn't even run once this past week.  But I did manage to haul my ass out there yesterday and run 6.3 miles.  Like I said before, I'm consistently inconsistent.)

Anyway, I am someone who needs to have music when I run.  Hearing myself huff and puff and breathe loudly totally psyches me out.  I get all focused on how short of breath I am which, in turn, makes me miserable.  So the loud music is vital for drowning MYSELF out.
(It IS TOO me.  I always wear matching pink when I run.  While smiling and wearing makeup.)

And I HATE having to fumble with my iPod if a slow(ish) song comes on right when I'm struggling to get up a hill.  There's nothing worse.  So, over time, I have tweaked my playlist accordingly so that all my songs are up-tempo and RUNNABLE (my new word).

These are my current faves:

1.  Imma Be - Black Eyed Peas
2.  Toxic/Womanizer - Britney Spears (Actually, all her music is surprisingly runnable.  Slutty, yet runnable.)
3.  Karma Chameleon - Culture Club  (No joke!  It has a great running tempo.)
4.  I'm Shipping Up to Boston/Tessie - Dropkick Murphys
5.  Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes

And my all-time favorite running song?  You will NEVER believe it...
Footloose - Kenny Loggins

Sadly, I'm so not kidding you guys.  Whenever it comes on, I play it overandoverandover again.  It has gotten me up steep hills.  It has kept me going in races.  It has given me wicked bad 80's flashbacks.  But whatever!  It's totally my go-to song of choice.

What are your favorite running songs?  Please share!

What a great post, I may have to do a similar one too..

I just joined a gym and am lost if I don't bring my ipod. I have a classic one but I also have a second generation shuffle that is great cuz I can clip it to my clothes and not worry about it. The music on it is geared for the gym, all fast paced and motivating.

My new favorite is Supersonic by Oasis.. the intro gets you going from the first beat

Just wanted to say, Tessie is one of my top songs on my ipod, too. Most people have no idea who/what song I am referring to when I say it really keeps me moving. Thanks for your picks. I am always looking for new music to keep me moving!

I have to start doing something. But I'm so soft and out of shape. But I gotta start right? Cuz it won't get better. At this age, exercise just keeps the wolves at bay....

If I did do some running, my song DEFINITELY would be "White wedding" by Billy Idol.

Oh, yeah, that'd be my song, sister!

I LOVE Footloose for running, I actually have a lot of bad 80's and hip hip on my running list. Kayne West (ass that he is) is good for running.

Black Eyed Peas - Hands Up... The only problem is trying not to shack that ass while you run to it, lol

I used to run to Do Anything For Love since it was like 9 minutes. I would berate myself if I couldn't make it through ONE song, but then I always would stop at the end. Meatloaf is probably not a good running song.

I love this post. I'm real temperamental about my running music. Of course upbeat is essential, though every long once in awhile my christmas music kicks in and I don't fast forward. I remember having a miracle run in college on our indoor track to Jimmy Buffet (who I now officially hate, blame it on the lame-o ex-boyfriend).

I like "Let's get it started" BEP.

And Dreams, by The Cranberries. Love footloose though, brings me back.

OMG! It's like we're twins separated at birth! Your life's goal is to run the Boston Marathon while listening to Footloose.

And my life's goal is to sleep with Kevin Bacon (soundtrack optional)! Seriously. Since I was 15 and saw the movie with Boring Boyfriend Bob.

I think it's important to have goals.

I agree with you on Britney Spears. When I work out she always gets me going. I can't stand slow songs. I loose my focus whenever a they come on. Kills my rhythm.

I was going to write about this, too!

I'll have to bookmark this so I can come back when I'm ready to download songs.

My current faves are Umbrella by Rihanna, Promiscuous Girl by Nelly Furtado, SexyBack by Justin Timberlake. I also have a lot of others, but those are just my most favorite.

Footloose! I hadn't thought about that one!
