A Beginner's Guide to Running - Finding the Motivation

I struggle with finding motivation DAILY.

Some days I can find it.  Other days I simply cannot.  The lure of a package of Oreos is just too strong sometimes, yannow?
I am consistently inconsistent.

My time to run is immediately when I get home from work at 5pm.  The house is empty.

I usually have my running clothes already laid out.  I have to MAKE MYSELF scurry into the house, go immediately upstairs, change my clothes and GET OUTSIDE.  Quickquickquick!

I am easily distracted.  By my laptop, by the mail, by the piles of laundry waiting, the dishes in the sink the clutter on the floortheoverflowinggarbageGAHHHHHHHHHH!

Because I have learned that if I putter around the house too long, I completely lose my motivation.  And pretty soon Hubby and the boyz get home, and then, well, I can't run THEN because there is dinner to be prepared, backpacks to unpack, little boyz to mother...

And the weekends are just as bad.  I get up and put on my running clothes.  And then?  I read the paper.  I do the breakfast dishes.  I start a load of laundry.  And then Hubby  leaves to run an errand and well, I can't very well leave the boyz alone.  So I have to wait for him to get back.  And before you know it, it's noon.  And there are still other things to do.  Oh well, no time to run today.

You guys.  I can't even count the number of times in the past that I have been fully DRESSED and READY to go for a run and then NOT GONE.

So I certainly don't have all the answers.

But what I do know is this:

Once I'm out there?  And have started my stopwatch?  I'm committed.  I'm committed to going for that 30+ minute run.  To feeling the burn.  To feeling like shit.  And then magically?  Feeling good.

And THAT is what keeps me motivated.

I'll keep saying it:  If I can do it, so can you.

It's the start of a new month ladies!  See the top of my right sidebar?  I'm tracking my running mileage.  You can too!  (My pace is usually around a 10-minute mile, so it's easy for me to calculate.  But if you don't have a fancy schmancy device and don't know what your pace is, check out Map My Run.)

My running goal for the month of April is to run more miles than I did in March.

What's yours?

I have two motivators for running - I've signed up for a 10k race in May, and my 20th high school reunion is in July! ;-P

My goal in April is to get out running every other day. Too often, I let life get in the way and rationalize that I just don't have time. This, of course, would also lead to my running further in April than I did in March! Will let you know how it goes...

I struggle so much with motivation. It drives me crazy because I really want so bad to exercise and be fit but I am having a hard training my brain.

I just need to figure out how to run with three kids when I'm with them all.day.long. I guess I could run at 7pm when my husband is finally home and we've finished dinner although then I'm burping up food and--ugh--I'm so tired by that point.

Sigh. It's never easy.

As I type with 1 hand I am nursing baby and wearing the running clothes that I put on at 5:30 am this morning... then I came downstairs and checked blogs, tweeted, justified not running YET, did a load, quickly drove to the store while The Manchild showered... the he left... and I can't very well leave the kiddos here alone!

Angie

Ps. These are the clothes that i put on last night after dinner when i was GOING to exercise, but then I couldn't find the video... so I didn't. Dah!!!

Have you thought about running in the a.m.? With a group? Not only will all of your dudes be sleeping, but you then have accountability.

I had lots of motivation issues (still do, just not in running), but had to re-work the family schedule to enable my sad attempt at bathingsuit season preparation (only to realize the sad truth that after all the exercise in the world, my stomach still needs a tuck as well as laser treatments).

I am seriously digging this series on running of yours.

I really need that motivation. Like you, I'm totally fine once I get out the door. It's all the stuff beforehand that kills me.

I started running to and/or from work, that way you are running for a purpose and it doesn't take too much time out of my day. Its only 4 miles though, couldn't really do it if it was much further

Before I got my treadmill, the only thing that motivated me to run was getting up early to do it. I had to get up at 5am to run before anyone woke up. I found that if I set my alarm and got up, I definitely ran. And I only ran M-F and took the weekends off.

The joys of a busy day~ the world of a Mom. You have a routine and that in itself makes life so much easier!

My husband runs marathons, and I tried, tried, tried to run. I love the idea of it. My body, after birthing two enormous babies, did NOT love the high-impact slamming against the pavement involved in running. Jumping jacks -- also a no-no. I'm hoping this is a temporary, ahem, situation.

First of all, chocolate filled oreos are worth all the procrastination in the world. Oh, did I say that out loud? Oops. You are awesome. Keep at it! Missed you guys last week. I was sooooo not feeling good.

I can so sympathize with putting on the clothes, getting completely ready, and even getting IN THE CAR....and still not actually go to the gym to run. I'd usually end up at Target, because that's obviously where you go when you're trying to avoid running. You and I should motivate each other through Twitter, daily. Then, maybe i won't reach whale-like status with this baby.

Finding motivation is nearly impossible.

The best way for me to exercise is to wake up early (5:15) because then I can't get side-tracked (have to get the kiddos to school on time).

I'm impressed about your running capabilities. Currently, I alternate running for two minutes and then walking for two minutes. If I tried to run the entire workout, I'd probably keel over!

Over from SITS

Before I had #3, I joined an all-women running group that met at 5:30 a.m M-W-F. Then I started doing some distance races (2 half-marathons and 2 fulls) and I felt worse if I DIDN'T run. So two weeks after my 2nd marathon I got pg (suprirse!) and wasn't able to run through the pregnancy. Suffice to say, he's a year now and I'm STILL trying to get out there (or on the treadmill in our garage) consistently.

This morning I went for a 3 miler and it was such a gorgeous day, and I was listening to my iPod, and I swear I was smiling (yep, that was me, the smiling loon running around the lake). Have felt great all day.

But I'm still in my running clothes. Because taking a shower? Now that's REALLY asking too much!

I am totally with you, really, I am... See, about 3 years ago, I set out to run a half marathon. Never mind that I never ran anything more than a 5k, but nonetheless I wanted to do it.

I did. Then I got pregnant. Morning Sickness sucked the life out of me and my running went out the door.

Since I had B, I have been running. I even signed up for a half marathon again.

But then the snow hit and Oh Yeah, B was sick every other week from daycare... which got me sick.

Let's just say motivation is hard to come by with an 11 month old, who is sick.. and getting me sick all the time.

So now? No race. But I am still working out... when I can. I guess I'm on the "something is better than nothing" training plan!

Man, I was complaining a lot just then. I'm not usually a complainer. I think I'm just a bit disappointed by myself.

And of course, working that issue out on your blog is clearly appropriate :)

But I am going to keep checking in here. I need some motivation!
