Not Making Lemons Out of Lyme *UPDATED*

Dear Mommy,

You know me better than anyone else in the world. Please trust your instincts when it comes to my health. Because doctors can be wrong sometimes.

Love,
Your Child

*****
Remember when I took Middle to Kid's Care and he was diagnosed with the coxsackie virus? And I wrung my hands and wailed because I was SURE that Eldest and Baby would soon follow?

There is no treatment for this typical summer virus. You just have to let it run its course. So, for days afterward, Middle continued to struggle with a low-grade fever and lethargy. (The doctor told me the fever could last for up to 8 days.)

I worried, sure, but then he'd have one good day with no temperature and normal energy levels.

So while it nagged at me, I let it go.

This weekend, while my family was in town for the holiday weekend, it became apparent that something was still wrong with Middle. While the other children were outside playing, he was content to sit indoors watching TV or playing his Nintendo.

And I started having doubts about the diagnosis. Middle's appetite never waned. (Usually the mouth sores cause great discomfort.)

And trust me, the only thing my boyz actually share is ILLNESS. But neither Eldest nor Baby contracted the virus.

Verrrrrrrry suspicious.

At my insistence, Hubby took him back to the doctor yesterday. They did bloodwork, and he is now being treated for Lyme Disease (with amoxicillin 3 times a day). Even though we don't yet have the results of said bloodwork.

Gah.

I'm totally frustrated and am determined to get to the bottom of this. If the bloodwork comes back negative for Lyme? You can bet that I will be on a MISSION to find out what is wrong. What child runs a low-grade fever for almost 2 FULL WEEKS? THAT IS NOT RIGHT.

As any mother knows, when your child hurts, you hurt. I feel so guilty that this innocent 5 year old has felt like CRAP for 2 weeks now that it has become his new normal to feel this way. It breaks my heart.

Momma promises to make it all better, buddy.

UPDATE: Received call from the doctor's office late today. He confirmed Middle indeed has Lyme disease. He's now on an antibiotic (amoxicillin) 3 times a day for 3 weeks. Fingers crossed that my little guy feels better soon!

Oh man. Those symptoms are exactly what my 2 year old has right now. I was going to wait a day or so before calling the doctor. I was just there yesterday with my daughter but he was having a "good day" so I didn't even think about it.

I hope they figure out what is causing your son's illness. It sucks not knowing what to do to make it all better.

I've heard this is a VERY tough thing to catch if you don't see the tick or the bullseye which is entirely possible given how small those suckers are. I hope the meds help him out, that the tests are negative and that he's back to normal soon.

Ugh, so sorry to hear that. Lyme is very common, unfortunately, in my town. Whenever my kids get a headache the first thing I think of is Lymes.
I don't know if you have a lot of ticks around your house (we do), but we ended up putting these tick tubes around the perimeter of our yard, which seemed to have helped a lot.
Don't beat yourself up on not knowing...Lyme is really hard to catch because the symptoms vary so much and mimick other things.
Hoping he feels better soon!

Good Luck! It has been 3 years and my sister is still trying to figure out what is wrong with her. The regular Lyme tests came back negative, but extensive testing showed she has an advanced case, but after 3 years of misdiagnosis, we are wary although she has all the symptoms.

So sorry you've got this going on. We went through it with my daughter when she was in high school. Apparently the Cape has a high incidence. We actually found the tick bite on her.

She did the 30 day antibiotics and got over the fevers but still gets fatigued easily. I have a friend who, along with her daughter, had to do a course of IV antibiotics.

Hope your little guy feels better soon.

Mommy instincts far outweigh any degree doctors have. Good for you!

Ay. Isn't it all so frustrating sometimes? Glad they caught it on the early (-ish!) side, though, and hope he's all better soon!

Good for you for staying on top of it. I will keep my fingers crossed (and say a prayer) that all is well very shortly. Poor little guy.
