To Nap or Not to Nap...That is the Question

All 3 of my boyz have always been good sleepers. Sure, we have the occasional "nocturnal emissions" or a bout of midnight vomiting, but for the most part, Hubby and I are very lucky in that we normally sleep through the night uninterrupted.

In fact, if they're tired, my boyz will even ask to go to bed.

I KNOW.

And if that doesn't kill you, guess what else?

Baby, at age 3-1/2, naps pretty much daily. And still goes to bed at 8:30 p.m.

And Middle, at age 4-1/2, still naps sometimes. The babysitter gives him "rest time" for an hour. Occasionally he falls asleep. Which can be a BAD thing. Keep reading.

For when Middle does nap? He's certifiably OFF THE WALL those evenings. Hyper, manic and simply just OVER RESTED. My normally laid-back thumb-sucking mellow video game puzzle geek turns into a MANIAC.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you Exhibit A:

Too Much Sleep from Sarah Viz on Vimeo.

Please be advised that no sugar was administered to the defendant beforehand. It's simply a manifestation of the effects of a mid-day 2 hour nap on a 4-1/2 year old.

Let this be a warning to you all. There IS such a thing as TOO MUCH SLEEP.

I rest my case.

I think that was the funniest things I've seen in a long time!!! You should totally send that in to America's Funniest Videos or something! The end where he hits the high note is the best! Thanks for the laugh....and tell the babysitter NO NAPS for middle!

He may be a maniac but he sure is cute.

Middle and my Tyler are the same age...I would go NUTS without naptime here! However, if this is what I was faced with at dinner on nap-days, I think that would drive me nuts, too!

He just MIGHT be ready to be past the nap-phase - ya think???

That video was hilarious!

My girls ask to go to bed, as well. It amazes me. Now that we are homeschooling and my daughter is home every day. My 3 yr old doesn't take as many naps. But it's ok. There are days when she'll just crawl on my bed or the couch & just fall off to sleep, all on her own. I love those days. ;o)

oh crap! I'm at work and this computer won't let me watch videos!
I will have to scope out another computer later to watch.

My 4 year old can't nap during the day either - not because she gets hyper, but because she will be up until midnight if she has even a 20 minute nap. - daycare has instructions to keep her awake at all costs!

Yep. My kids are just like yours....Jake cried when he realized that going to 1st grade meant no more naps. When Olivia continued being her super hyper self at 8:00 and was still talking at 100 miles a minute when lights were out and she was in bed, that is when we decided it was time to cut out the naps....she would still be singing and talking to herself at 9:00 and 9:30....then once the naps were gone, she would be asleep by 7:30! Silence is golden I tell you! :)

What a hoot! I wish my almost-2-year-old would still nap. She's given them up for good, I fear. *sigh*

I agree. If my 4.5 year old gets a nap in, I better be ready for her to stay up at least until 10pm - she'll tuck me in bed!

Don't you wish you could tap into that energy somehow? You'd be so productive - because, natch, you would funnel it into productive pursuits - or you could power your house for a year.

Jacob is 4 1/2 and riiiiiight on the edge of giving up naps. He sleeps about 3 days a week, and has quiet time the rest... and Emily still has quiet time, too, at almost-9.
