Complete and Utter Kodak Devastation

Alternately titled: "Why Sarah's Eyes Are So Puffy This Morning."

Our computer SUCKS. It's slow and annoying.

We figured that much of it probably had to do with my storage of almost 5,000 photos and videos on our system.

Everyone recommended that I burn my photos to disc. Yeah, we don't have a CD burner. And I've never done Snapfish, Shutterfly, etc. Everything is was on my Kodak Easyshare program.

So - I bought an external hard drive. To transfer all my photos there, to free up our computer space.

Yesterday afternoon, I plugged in the hard drive. I "successfully" transferred the photos. I double-checked to make sure they were in the file folder that I had meticulously labeled "backed-up photos."

And then last night I started deleting. Deleting all my photos and videos, secure in the knowledge that they were, indeed, backed-up on the external hard drive.

Notsomuch.

When I went back to triple-check the back-up, I discovered that the files had not been all backed up. That it only successfully transferred 2005 and 2006 photos. None of the 2007 or 2008 files.

This file folder is empty.
This file folder is empty.
This file folder is empty.

I honestly can't remember the last time I cried. Last night, though, I was hysterical. Inconsolable. Hubby just kept repeating, "Don't cry. Don't cry." as he tried to work some magic.

Nothing.

Today I am still just as sad. Pissed at myself for pushing that delete button. F*cking irate at that piece of metal machinery.

And hopeful. Hopeful that someone in IT at Hubby's work will be able to rescue my beloved photos and videos.

Fingers crossed. *wiping away more tears*

OH NO! I am SO sorry. Hoping someone can recover them for you...
Do you have some of them printed?

Oh no! =-( I feel your pain. My husband recorded over the top of my first born's first birthday party. I cried too. Losing those precious memories is hard (very hard). Don't try and tell me, "Well, it could be worse."

I'm SO sorry! ~Kellie

Oh no!! I totally know where you are at though....I have a dead hard drive still sitting in my home office with all of Jake's baby pictures on it....I refuse to get rid of it in hopes that someone can revive it and I can get them off some how......I have my fingers crossed for you.

Take a deep breath and repeat after me - Nothing is really deleted. NOTHING is really deleted.

It's all there, hon. You just need the right person to get to your pictures. Good luck!

Oh that sucks! I hope that someone can restore them all for you.

Oh my, I am so sorry. When my oldest was born, I lost a whole role of pictures - the developers issue and was devastated, but it was just one of many rolls. I don't know what I'd do if I lost 2 years worth of photos!

I hope they can retrieve the pictures!

That is my worst nightmare, but I know it's going to happen to me someday because I am soooo bad about backing up! Surely SOMEONE can work some magic! I mean, if people can hack their way into the Pentagon, surely they can retrieve your photos! I'll say a prayer for you and your pics!!!

That totally sucks. Here's hoping IT comes to the rescue.

Oh no!! HUGS!!! I feel your pain, though. Back in February of this year, my husband was switching from XP to Vista... little did we know that the extra hard drive, that we backed all of our stuff up on, would be the "back up" hard drive that Vista wiped out & over wrote everything on there. Every picture I had from my very first digital camera until Feb of this year, all gone. All the pictures of my youngest at birth, all gone. I was to stunned to cry.

I really hope that someone can find your pictures for you!

Is there any small chance that you are using a Windows PC and you did not empty the recycling bin and that all those pictures are somehow still in there waiting to be restored?

Just a small hope for those pics.

oh my GOD....I am so sorry. I am getting weepy just thinking about. Totally sending good wishes your way that they can recover those photos!!!

And today I am ordering the backup disks from Shutterfly for ALL my pics, which I will put in my safety deposit box.

I feel your pain. But I bet you'll be able to recover your photos. Last year, two days after Christmas I accidentally deleted all my Christmas photos. I about flipped my lid. My computer genius brother told me to download a program called Recuva and try that. I found every single photo. If the IT guys at your husband's work don't get around to your computer, try Recuva (www.recuva.com). It was super easy to use too.

I'll bet those photos are still in there somewhere. And those IT folks can work wonders!
Sending you lots of hugs!

OH NO OH NO !!

I would cry too! I hope someone can retrieve them. Surely if it said they were backed up they are somewhere right? Maybe it created some strange subdirectory within the other folders??

Oh no! I'm so sorry, I would be crying my eyes out too! I really hope you can find someone that can help you get them back!

Agh#&$^(#&$)@(*^!)&*^!!! I am so sorry. I am crossing my fingers that your photos are SOMEWHERE retrievable!

OMG NOOOOOO! Technology is great that we can store photos digitally, however, when it goes wrong, it goes WRONG!

I am praying you can get them back!! Hugs sweetie!

I'm so sorry. I know the feeling well...we lost 1.5 years worth of photos when my laptop died on New Year's Day. I never did a backup. I hope some of the IT gurus can help you restore your pics.

Oh my goodness, I feel panic for you. I am so very sorry. I lost photo's too... and cried my heart out. I hope you get them back.

I would have cried too. I'm so sorry - there aren't too many things that are more precious to me than my photos.

Scary Mommy said...

Oh, no!!! I feel for you. Someone stole our video camera with all of my daughters infancy & sons birth on it. I still tear up thinking about it. Had you printed out most of them?

Karly said...

I just went through the same thing, only my external drive failed, taking with it four years worth of pictures. I so know how you feel. I still cry if I think about it too much and it happened a couple months ago. That probably didn't make you feel better did it?

Sorry. Hope they can work some IT magic.

And I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend a double back up system. Either two external drives (pricey, I know) or uploading your favorites to a storage site (like Flickr).

I recorded over my youngest's first Christmas. It is very sad! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. My Gram used to say, "St. Anthony, St. Anthony come around something is lost and can't be found." Maybe it will help.

I am so sorry to hear this!

Thanks for the warning. My computer is sooo slow because of all the photos I have stored on it.

I can understand why you are so upset. I wish I could make it better.

oh no! keeping my fingers crossed!

katesaid said...

Oh, honey, what a nightmare. I can't imagine.

Thanks for the reminder that I am way overdue for backing up my own photos. I have them mostly on flickr, all on my hard drive, and periodically backed up on DVD as well - I'm so paranoid about losing them. This may be related to the fact that my computers have an odd way of suddenly and irreversibly committing suicide with no warning.

Rachel said...

Oh mah hell!! I hope they're retrievable!!!!

Yikes.

Kylee said...

Oh man! I would die if that happened! I have said a quick prayer that you can get them recovered. Keep us updated!

Oh my stars! I hope you are able to recover the pictures.
