Summer's End

Although Labor Day weekend is deemed the "official" last weekend of summer, for us here in the Trenches, it was this one. With football in full swing, soccer starting soon, and Eldest beginning 1st grade on Wednesday, it seems that Summer '08 is fading (too) fast:

Friday night after work, we helped my Niece celebrate her 10th birthday with cake and ice cream. It was a walk down memory lane for me as I picked out some new books for her: 2 Judy Blume and Harriet the Spy!

Saturday morning dawned bright and early with Pop Warner weigh-ins for Eldest. He's a whopping 47 pounds. Be scared, be very scared, you opposing linebackers.

Next was Middle's soccer festival.

Saturday evening was an impromtu cookout with our next-door neighbors. Apparently SOMEONE doesn't like having his picture taken when he's chowing down a big-ass burger.

Then some sparklers were lit...
and thankfully no one lost an eye.

Sunday morning found us at the football field for the first game of the season (and Hubby's assistant coaching debut). Eldest is #38--because it's "Daddy's age and Curt Schilling's number."

He actually caught a pass! (The entire last season, the team didn't run ONE pass play. Today, they attempted 4.)

It's gonna be a long season though. Middle and Baby complained they were cold, hungry, and tired. And that was just within the first 5 minutes.

And then the weekend came to a close with a fabulous end-of-summer meal: steak, corn on the cob, and fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella with balsamic vinegar. (I merely shucked the corn. Hubby is the chef in these here Trenches.)

What goes best with steak? Why, it's WINE, of course. Oh yeah, I uncorked the wine too.

And now, it's time to say goodbye to some summer momentos:

The half-empty jugs of pure sugar water that Daddy bought that Mommy would NEVER buy littering the lawn...

and Momma's bare feet reveling in lush, green grass.

Much too soon, the bikes will be replaced with sleds... *sob*

and choco-tacos and watermelon sno-cones from the ice cream truck will be a distant memory...

but thankfully so will the itchy scratchy bug bites...

And the dozens of pairs of flip-flops will be replaced by 3 boyz sporting their new school sneakers.

But no matter what the season, the brotherly love remains. Here's to a LONG Indian summer!

[Hey, does it make me un-American that I didn't watch even a smidge of the closing Olympic ceremony so that I could post this?]

I loved this post. Feeling the dychotomy of boys-in-school-hurrays but end-of-summer-blues here, too.

Nine days 'til kindergarten and 14 til preschool!

You sighed "thank God" when he caught the pass, didn't you?

Oh no, don't say that. I can't be the end so soon. I know that school starts and all, but that just means that winter is around the corner. Sigh...

I'm a little new here, I like your style. And...cute toes! I only have one boy and a girl, but for me - that's enough. I admire your tenacity with three boys.
