Middle's Special Day

I am a fan of the show Jon & Kate Plus 8. Some of their ideas--especially the hugging after hurting someone, and the day alone with each child--are being copied by us in the Trenches.

"The Great Discovery", a Thomas the Tank Engine movie, was playing at our local theatre on weekend mornings. My original plan was to take all 3 boyz, but then I quickly came to my senses changed my mind. Why would I put myself through that sort of torture when it's really only Middle who even remotely cares about is obsessed with Thomas?

So Saturday was deemed to be "Middle's Special Day with Mommy." It was very touching to see how excited he was about it, and I was pleased to be able to spend some one-on-one time with my 4 year old middle child.

Middle certainly marches to the beat of his own drummer. He's quirky, he's random and he's pretty darn funny. Here's some snippets of a few conversations:

Him: When you eat food, does it go all the way down into your legs?
Me: (thinking "Wha???") Uh, no, it stops at your belly.

Me to him (in the middle of the toy aisle at Target): Hey, do you have to pee?
Him: No.
Me: Then why do you keep holding down there?
Him: I'm just arranging it.

So we saw the movie, shopped for birthday presents for my Nephew and Middle got to pick out a new lunch box (Thomas, of course) for preschool.

And now I have 2 more little boyz clamoring at me about their very own Special Days...

We do this, too - special days with Mommy and special days with Daddy. It is amazing how it can change a child's attitude.

Of course, special days with Mommy have recently been laden with vomit and fever, but hey, it definitely makes the day more "special", you know!

We try to do special Mommy and Daddy days as well. IN fact, Einey just begged to go with Husband to get new tires on the van to have some time with him. Usually it doesn't matter what's happening, thy just have fun!

Found you on MBC and this is such a good idea! I am also a Jon and Kate fan, they have the best ideas! We want to try for one more, and I am really hoping for a 3rd boy, so you are totally inspiring me:)

I too love Jon and Kate ! My DH and son go on ATV rides to spend quality tile together. The boy and I need to make a trip to the movies seeing as we haven't done that in a while.

I'm the mom of another BIG Thomas fan! We're going to see Thomas' Day Out in OK in the fall. I can't wait to see the boys' faces when they get to ride on a actual Thomas the Tank Engine.

HRH and I go out on "dates" - usually to the movies as RC is still beyond atrocious at movies.

It's been far too long since we've done more than a solo trip to Stop and Shop.

Was Thomas everything you hoped it could be?

That is great, I love that idea. My husband is about to start that with my two. Just going to breakfast with them individually once every two weeks or so.

Cute conversations, I can't wait till my boy can talk.

I finally saw the john & kate plus 8 show -- wow..I don't know how they do it with 8 kids!! I love the one day alone idea. I grew up doing that with my dad while living in Pittsburgh. I have so many special memories from our Saturday trips around town together!! To this day, I still talk about it!! A great tradition to start!

We did the special days with each child for a while. I don't know how it happened, but we got off track with it. Thanks for the reminder, I think we'll have to start again!
