We knew the time would come. Eldest is just starting to enlighten us with stories and such that he's learned on the school bus. Oh great.

Tonight at dinner, he blurted out with, "Matthew on the bus says that if you stick up your middle finger, it means a baaaaaaad word."

Hubby responded, very seriously, "YES, it does. Don't ever let me see you doing that, okay. It's really not nice. And it does mean something bad. Something very bad."

All was quiet for a moment. And then Eldest offered, "I know what bad word it means."

I quietly choked on my spaghetti. Hubby took a deep breath and asked, "You do? What bad word is it?" as we both mentally braced ourselves for the F-bomb to come spilling forth out of our innocent 6 year old's mouth.

Eldest responded, "It means jerk."

Yep, yep it does, buddy.

Whew.

Madeline has been calling her middle finger "tall guy" this past week. It was fine until she started only talking about the tall guy without all the other short guys. The we had to say the tall guy can only be put up in the air with his short wife.

EEEK. My daughter started using her middle finger to point recently, out of nowhere. We constantly have to remind her that that particular finger is not the "pointer".

What is wrong with the patch of skin uner that middle finger! It looks like an alien!!

Give it another week.

I learned that word AND that sign language on the bus in kindergarten too.

Dang, I'm going through this with my 5-year-old son even as I type. His dad had a business dinner and is not home yet. He is frantic about what his dad will do. (Right, I am so the disciplinarian around here.) Freakin' children. Where do they learn it?

Oh don't you love that. Here's hoping you get to hold onto that naivety for a little while longer.
