I Did It! (barely)
Yeah, this was pre-race, as evidenced by the still-smiling faces.

Everything hurts.
It hurts in places on my body where I didn't even know muscles and joints existed. Until now.
By the numbers:
Mile 1: A very quick pace. Sis and I completed Mile 1 in 8:43.
Miles 2-5: Decent and not uncomfortable (except for my timing chip around my ankle that kept rubbing). Some rolling hills. One steep hill, but it wasn't overwhelming because it was the beginning of the race. We finished Mile 5 around 47:00. I start to get cranky at this point and get irked when a runner budges right between Sis and I, even though we're running elbow to elbow.
Mile 6: A gradual LONG hill. I slow down. Sis speeds up and that's the last I see of her.
Mile 7: A decent, shady downhill stretch. I actually feel like I'm catching my second wind and feel positive that I can DO IT!
Mile 8: My f*cking iPod stops working. Completely. I shed a few tears in frustration and spend an entire 1/2 mile trying to get it to come back on. I consider tossing it, but then realize I'd feel stupid wearing/carrying a set of earphones attached to NOTHING.
On top of that, I'm extremely pissed that they only have water stops every 2 miles. I have cottonmouth and can't even make spit.
AND I'm pissed when I run past someone who's walking, and then they start running again and pass me.
Mile 9 to end: UPHILL. THE ENTIRE WAY. I feel like I'm trudging. I start walking (for the first time in the entire race), take about 10 steps, and then see my Sis up ahead, coming back for me (she's already finished in a time of 1hr, 34 min). Shit. Can't walk. Gotta run. Sis totally motivates me to the end, as I'm huffing and puffing and seriously feel like I CAN'T put one foot in front of the other.
I make it. I finish with a time of 1hr, 42 min.
7:47: Time I was in bed last night.

I had major reconstructive foot surgery in March (not that I'm counting but it was SIX months ago and I still can barely walk to the corner) and it ended my running career. So, I find myself simultaneously jealous as hell and really proud of your accomplishment! You rule but I am trying not to call you a bad word.
Sigh. Hurrah!
Barb
Whoa! Good for you! I am SOOO impressed! And I totally get the iPod thing, and the walker who then passes you thing. UGH! But anyway, that is awesome! Someday I'll be brave enough to run a race. Could be fun, not having to bring my dog and poop bags along...
Go Sarah! Congratulatoins!
You ROCK, Sarah.
Congratulations! You're seriously motivating me to get out walking again and get some exercise. I don't like that, because being lazy is suiting me right now ;)
Congrats again!
You go girl!! I'm very proud of you for finishing that race.
Congratulations! I wish I could run but I just can't.
Congrats, friend! You are my hero - I NEVER could've done what you did yesterday. I'm so proud of you!
Girl, that is amazing. You should be so proud.
Barely finishing is still finishing. Which is more than I could have done. So, YAY for you!
Uphill?? I shudder to think of it.
I don't even run across the street, so my hat is DEFINITELY off to you! Congrats!
YYYYYYYYYYEEEEESSSSSS!!
Wow, I'm so impressed!!! You are inspiring me to run MORE.

You're awesome!
Congrats!! I feel your pain. My purpose in running is just to finish the race!! I used to do a lot of 5ks and 10ks. I should get back into running trenches....You are inspiring!!
good for you!
Wow. I'm impressed. I have been vowing to start running for (no lie) 20 years. I really need to work on stamina. I really admire you!
My 4 year old has school Thursday-and no tennis for me. Maybe I'll start then!!! I'll keep you posted.
I'm so proud of you!
Whoa! 1hr, 42 min!!! That rocks. Congratulations!
Kudos! Great job!
You rock hard!
Amazing! I haven't done an 8:43 mile run since I was in the 8th grade. Kudos to you.
You did it!!!! That is awesome!
You just rock! I would've complained if I had to drive that far.
Found you through BlogHer - Enjoyed this post because I am running my very first ten mile on ... October 7! I'm nervous! Good Luck.
